A PROJECT ROOTED IN COMPASSION, LEADERSHIP, AND LEGACY
Beds for Jamaica
Initiative
A youth-led project bringing brand-new mattresses and handwritten letters of hope to families rebuilding after Hurricane Melissa.

THE STORY
“How can I
help?”
I am Zoraida De Souza — a youth leader, changemaker, and student. This is the story of how a moment of heartbreak turned into a movement of hope.
When Hurricane Melissa tore through the heart of Jamaica, it left more than just physical destruction in its wake; it left families stripped of their dignity and sleepless nights spent on cold floors. The impact was personal and profound, watching my community struggle to reclaim the basics of human comfort.
Standing amidst the debris, I felt a weight I couldn't ignore. It wasn't just sadness—it was a call to action. I looked at the survivors and asked myself a simple, transformative question: “How can I help?” I didn't have all the answers, but I knew I couldn't stay silent while my neighbors suffered.
That single question sparked the Beds for Jamaica Initiative. What began as a local effort to provide mattresses and handwritten letters of hope has grown into a movement of compassion, proving that when youth lead with heart, we can mend the broken pieces of our society one rest at a time.

OUR ROOTS
Why this project
matters to
me
My Jamaican heritage is a big part of my identity and the communities impacted by Hurricane Melissa are the same places my parents and grandparents grew up.
This initiative became my way to:
- Honor my Jamaican roots
- Carry forward my family’s legacy of generosity
- Lead with empathy and courage
- Prove that young people can spark real humanitarian change
FROM QUESTION TO ACTION
How the initiative
started
My mom and I researched what families needed most. The answer was clear: they needed beds. So we got to work.
01 / Production
Mattresses
We negotiated a special manufacturing rate with Boss Furniture for brand-new mattresses.
02 / Distribution
Deliveries
We coordinated transportation with Stewart’s Automotive Group, partnered with Good Hope Charity for official distribution, and worked with Kind Hearts Jamaica for community support.
03 / Community
Letters of hope
We mobilized donors through social media and WhatsApp and organized a letter-writing drive. Every mattress included a handwritten note so families received comfort and encouragement.
THE IMPACT
Restoring comfort,
dignity & hope
With donors, volunteers, and partners in Jamaica, Beds for Jamaica raised J$2 million to help provide mattresses for families rebuilding after Hurricane Melissa.
- Brand-new mattresses and linens
- Safe, organized delivery into remote communities
- Personal letters of hope from donors
- Support from trusted Jamaican community organizations
Many recipients told us this was their first good night’s sleep since the hurricane.
J$2 million raised.
Dignity restored, one bedroom at a time.
A SCHOOL-WIDE ACT OF KINDNESS
Letters of
Hope
We invited donors to write letters of compassion and encouragement that were placed inside each mattress. These messages offered comfort, strength, and a reminder that families were not alone.
Our school later approved community service hours for each letter, turning it into a youth-led movement of empathy.
Every mattress carried a message that said:
“You are not forgotten.
We see you.
We stand with you.”

YOUTH LEADERSHIP
What I learned
Through the Beds for Jamaica Initiative, I learned:
Most importantly, I learned that young people can lead movements when they lead with compassion.
“Compassion is not just a feeling; it is an active choice to mend what is broken in our world.”
— Zoraida
Youth can lead massive humanitarian logistics when driven by empathy.
The power of a single handwritten letter in restoring human dignity.
Collaboration with local manufacturers creates sustainable change.
Community resilience is built through visible acts of solidarity.
Mobilizing social networks can bridge identified local needs quickly.
Leadership is about asking 'how can I help?' and following through.
SUPPORT THE MOVEMENT
The initiative
is growing
My goal is to expand into:
- Bedding & hygiene kits
- Care packages
- School supplies
- Continued mattress deliveries
- Ongoing student-led letter-writing drives
